During Awa-odori season, we’re having an exhibition! A famous Japanese painter (Ukiyo-e artist) actually lived in Tokushima !?

阿波踊り期間も展示会開催！あの超有名な日本の画家（浮世絵師）は実は徳島に住んでいた？！

Even if you’re not really interested in Japanese art, you may have seen this painting before!
The painter is a famous ukiyo-e (traditional Japanese art) artist who was active in the Edo period.
あまり日本の美術に関心がなくとも、この絵を見たことがある人はいるはず！
この人は江戸時代に活躍していた有名な浮世絵師なんです。

His name is Tōshūsai Sharaku.
その名は東洲斎写楽。

He’s known as a mysterious ukiyo-e artist.
He published his works such as Yakushae (print of Kabuki actors) during his career which spanned only ten months and before a sudden disappearance from the ukiyo-e scene.
It is said that Sharaku lived in Tokushima at that time and he was a Noh actor (Noh is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama) under the leadership of Hachisuka (the feudal lord of Tokushima.)

謎の浮世絵師とも言われる。
約10か月という短い期間に役者絵などの作品を発表した後、突然と姿を消した謎の絵師なんです。
実は、この写楽は当時徳島に住んでおり、徳島のリーダー（蜂須賀:Hachisuka）の下で”能楽(日本の伝統芸能)”をしていた人物だったと言われている。

Lord Hachisuka was also known to be an Awa-odori lover and at that time, people in Tokushima gave importance to arts and culture.
In that very city; Tokushima, we are having an exhibition of Sharaku’s ukiyo-e work during this Awa-odori season!

この蜂須賀という人物は阿波踊りも大切にしていたことでも知られており、当時の徳島は美術や文化をとても重んじていたことがわかる。
そんな徳島で写楽の浮世絵の展示会が阿波踊り期間中も開催しています！

展示会情報

145 pieces of ukiyo-e paintings will be exhibited with a focus on Sharaku’s famous piece “Yakushae.” We are also having other various events during this season.
・Makeup demonstration for Japanese clothing/kimono.
・Letterpress printing experience for children.
Not only paintings but there are many various events. Please come and experience Japanese paintings and culture!

写楽の役者絵を中心に浮世絵１４５点が展示されているほか、期間中はさまざまなイベントをしているようですよ！

・子ども向けの活版印刷体験
絵だけでなく様々な催しが予定されているみたい。ぜひ日本の絵画文化に触れてみよう。

Sharaku’s grave is in Tokushima?
写楽のお墓は徳島にある？

Sharaku rests in an area called Teramachi, where there are 24 temples.
Since it only takes 10 minutes from “Tokushima Arts Foundation for Culture” to this place, we would recommend visiting the grave site on your way back home.
徳島の寺町界隈（Teramachi）と呼ばれる、24ものお寺が集まっている場所に写楽は眠っている。
あわぎんホール（Tokushima Arts Foundation for Culture）からも歩いて10分ほどの場所にあるため、展示会の帰り道に行くこともおすすめだ。
